Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) For Cases Of Infertility

IUI – Artificial Insemination

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is the least complex of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and is often tried as a first treatment option in uncomplicated cases of infertility. IUI involves preparing and delivering sperm so that a highly concentrated amount of active, motile sperm is placed directly into the uterus.

How Does IUI Work?

IUI can be performed using the sperm from the female’s male partner or donor sperm may be used. The procedure is typically combined with ovarian stimulation and ovulation induction through hormone therapy. The treatment is generally used for women with open fallopian tubes and a normal uterine cavity. IUI is also routinely used in male factor infertility cases due to sperm deficiencies due to blockage, low sperm count, low motility, low volume, or other unexplained infertility.

The IUI procedure involves monitoring of the woman’s cycle with blood testing for hormone levels and pelvic ultrasounds to monitor the growth of the eggs and determine the appropriate time for HCG injection administration. HCG triggers the release of the eggs by the ovary (ovulation). At the time of ovulation, the man produces semen specimens through masturbation either at home or in a private room at Kofinas Fertility Institute. After the semen specimen is prepared and washed, it is then injected into the woman’s uterus using a thin, flexible tube called an insemination catheter.

IUI is performed in the physician’s office without anesthesia. After the IUI, the woman can return to her normal activities.

Usually, two IUIs are done – the first at 12 hours and the second at 36 hours – after the HCG injection has been administered.
