Embryo Cryopreservation
To state simply: embryo cryopreservation is the freezing of an embryo, the first stage of a baby in which the sperm had fertilized the egg. Many couples choose to freeze embryos following in vitro fertilization in order to help achieve pregnancy at a later date. Whether it’s because they achieved pregnancy following the embryo transfer from IVF and would like to save some embryos for another pregnancy, or the cost is too high to do all procedures at one time, embryo cryopreservation keeps the embryo healthy for future use.
Moreover, some couples may choose to freeze embryos if one partner must undergo cancer treatment that can harm positive reproductivity but are not yet ready to be pregnant. There are many more reasons a couple may pursue embryo cryopreservation.
Part of this procedure includes a special solution that prevents ice crystals from harming the embryo. The embryos are placed in liquid nitrogen and frozen around -400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Frozen Embryo Transfer
FET is the actual movement of the embryo from the frozen state into the uterus. Whenever the woman is ready for pregnancy, Dr. Kofinas thaws the embryo and washes the embryos in a cleansing solution that removes the cryoprotectants. Then, he implants the embryo into the woman’s uterus lining in hopes of achieving pregnancy.
