Treating Ovarian Cysts
An ovarian cyst is a 2 cm or larger accumulation of fluid within an ovary that is surrounded by a very thin lining. These cysts can range from the size of a pea to larger than an orange. Ovarian cysts cause pain and bleeding and, in cases of an enlarged cyst, it can even protrude the woman’s abdomen.
According to Dr. George Kofinas, research studies by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have shown that most women in their prime reproductive years have cysts on their ovaries.
Types of Ovarian Cysts
There are two main categories of ovarian cysts: Functional and Pathological Ovarian Cysts.
- Functional Ovarian Cysts. These are very common and harmless cysts that form a part of the woman’s normal menstrual cycle and are short-lived.
- Pathological Ovarian Cysts. These cysts grow and are deeply implanted within one or both ovaries resulting in a dark, fluid-filled cavity or cyst formed known as endometrioma.
The final diagnosis must be clinically based upon a microscopic histologic examination of the actual cyst. Dr. George Kofinas recommends that ovarian cysts be surgically removed because these abnormalities will:
- Cause a woman to be infertile
- Complicate a woman’s treatment for infertility
- Decrease a woman’s ovarian function
- Cause a woman to experience pelvic pain
- Increase a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer
Treatment of Ovarian Cysts

- A laparoscope – small tube-shaped instrument with a light – is inserted into the abdomen.
- The doctor views the ovaries through the laparoscope and is able to remove or take a biopsy of the cyst.

- It is futile to treat the ovarian cyst simply through drainage because doing so results in only a temporary measure with treatment that only alleviates the cause of infertility for one month.
- Treatment by fulguration – or the burning of an endometrioma – is an ill conceived approach to the treatment of endometriomas as this treatment invariably destroy tens of thousands of viable eggs.
