Embryo freezing – embryo cryopreservation – has helped thousands of infertile couples have healthy babies. Embryos are fertilized eggs that can be frozen – cryopreserved – and then transferred to your uterus years in the future. Cryopreserved embryos can also be transferred to a surrogate’s uterus.
The process of thawing frozen embryos and implanting them into a women’s uterus is called frozen embryo transfer (FET).
Candidates for Frozen Embryo Transfer
- Couples who undergo IVF and have excess embryos they’d like to use later on. With FET technology, these couples can have a few more chances at pregnancy without having to endure the expense and stress of another fresh IVF cycle involving hormone injections, surgical procedures, and numerous doctor’s visits.
- Couples in which one partner must undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment that may destroy their ability to produce healthy eggs or sperm can conceive via FET.
- Single men and women facing cancer treatment that may render them infertile can use donor gametes and produce embryos to be frozen and used after recovery via FET.
- Infertile couples and single women can use frozen donor embryos to become pregnant via FET.
Embryos can be frozen from one to six days after fertilization. The freezing process involves mixing the embryos with a solution that prevents destructive ice crystals from forming between the cells. The embryos are then placed in plastic vials and secured in liquid nitrogen freezers cooled to -196° C (-400°F). When needed, the embryos are thawed and bathed in solutions to remove the freezing cryoprotectants before being transferred into the woman’s uterus for the hopeful implantation into her uterine lining and conception of a baby.
